Drug FAQs » Bipolar Drugs FAQ » Abilify

I’m bipolar II btw, so I don’t need it for mania.
I’ve been on it for a month – it helps a little bit, just not as much as other anti-psychotics did. (I quit those because of uncontrollable weight gain.)

A: I have recently started taking Abilify along with my depakote. It seems to be working. Last night I could have pulled off one of my yelling in the phone incidents, but…………I didn’t yeah!!!!!!! I have been taking abilify for a couple of weeks now. I do believe it is helping with my anger. It also suppresses my appetite. Depakote made me hungry.

I also take cymbalta.

Q: Does the vomiting side effect of abilify go away?
My son started taking abilify a couple of weeks ago. He has vomited every few days since starting. We know this is a side effect but haven’t found any information as to whether it goes away. Anyone out there who has used abilify and had this side effect – does it subside or stay constant? We also have the same question about the dizziness. Thanks!

A: May be this is result of Overdose

Detailed Information about Abilify:

What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine. Overdose symptoms may include drowsiness, vomiting, agitation, aggression, confusion, tremors, fast or slow heart rate, seizure (convulsions), trouble breathing, feeling light-headed, or fainting.

How you should take Abilify
Take Abilify exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label.

Do not take aripiprazole for longer than 6 weeks unless your doctor has told you to. Take each dose with a full glass of water.

Abilify can be taken with or without food.

Abilify is usually taken once a day. Follow your doctor ’s instructions.

Measure the liquid form of Abilify with a special dose-measuring spoon or cup, not a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist where you can get one.

To take aripiprazole orally disintegrating tablets (Abilify Discmelt):

Keep the tablet in its blister pack until you are ready to take the medicine. Open the package and peel back the foil from the tablet blister. Do not push a tablet through the foil or you may damage the tablet.

Using dry hands, remove the tablet and place it in your mouth. It will begin to dissolve right away.

Do not swallow the tablet whole. Allow it to dissolve in your mouth without chewing.

Swallow several times as the tablet dissolves. If desired, you may drink liquid to help swallow the dissolved tablet.

It is important to take Abilify regularly to get the most benefit.

To be sure this medication is helping your condition, your doctor will need to check your progress on a regular basis. It is important that you not miss any scheduled visits to your doctor.

Store Abilify tablets at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Abilify oral solution should be stored in the refrigerator and can be used for up to 6 months after opening.

What you should avoid while taking Abilify.
Abilify can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert.

Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may feel dizzy. Get up slowly and steady yourself to prevent a fall.

Avoid drinking alcohol, which can increase some of the side effects of Abilify.

Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated. Drink plenty of fluids, especially in hot weather and during exercise. It is easier to become dangerously overheated and dehydrated while you are taking Abilify.

Q: Is anyone having a problem with restlessness while taking Abilify? What helps you?
I am taking Abilify 15mg for Bipolar II and the restlessness is awful. I feel like I constantly need to move around and am very nervous.

A: Do you also have problems sleeping? My husband was on it for about 2 years and never got a full 8 hours sleep. He also was restless always wanting to walk a lot, do all the wrong things like throw stuff out that should not have been thrown out and so forth. His doctor then took him off abilify and put him on risperdal. Then he gained tons of weight. Then the doctor put him on Geodon which didn’t work, so now today he is trying something else. So what I’m saying is if you don’t like abilify, tell your doctor because there are several choices and sometimes it takes a few tries till you get it right. One med may be good for 1 person and be totally wrong for another. So don’t give up.

Q: What is the Limit of Abilify You Can Take in 24 hours?
What is the limit of abilify that you can take within 24 hours? Because I just took about 60 mg today, and I’m scared. I’m only 15. Is that too much?

A: From what I know the pill’s go up to 30mg which I believe to be the max. I’d get in contact with a pharmacist or doctor or someone who would know this kind of information.

Q: Do Abilify and Coffee in the Morning Improve Concetration?
I’m taking Abilify at night, but I would like to switch to morning along with coffee to see if it improves my concentration. I want to have the best of both worlds, less paranoiac and more concetration.

Can anyone gives me some feeback?

Q: What is the best time of day to take Abilify, morning or night?
I’ve been on Abilify for three weeks now and I’ve been feeling restless and draggy at the same time . . . weird, I know. I’ve been taking Abilify at night with my Trazadone, Effexor, Benicar, and Vytorin, but have been thinking of switching it to the morning with my Wellbutrin and Allegra. Any ideas?

A: I take Abilify 10 mg for schizophrenia. At first I took it all in the morning. Then I began to be really paranoid at night that someone would break in the house and kill me. So my psychiatrist said to take 5 mg in the morning and 5 mg at night. That worked out okay and my symptoms have been in remission for 4 years now.

Q: Does Abilify cause weight gain by slowing down the metabolism?
I have been on abilify for the last month and noticed significant weight gain. Does this med generally cause weight gain since it falls under the class of antipsychotics.

A: Yes, weight gain is a common side effect of Abilify. Sometimes, the side effect puts the patient at a higher risk for diabetes. Let your physician know.

Q: How much weight gain is expected on Abilify?
How much weight gain is expected on Abilify? I’m sensitive about gaining weight although I’m not skinny or not obese. I’d rather lose weight than gain weight!

A: I have put on 35lbs in the 6 months I’ve been taking Abilify. Thank god my new psychiatrist told me that was the cause!!! I would have just kept putting on weight. I quit taking it about a week ago and I notice a huge difference in my appetite. I loved Abilify until I realized it was the cause of my weight gain =/

Q: How long will it take for the side effects of going off Abilify to go away?
I was on 2mg. It’s been four days and I’m still having some of the side effects that made me go off it. Maybe the better question is, how long does it take for Abilify to get out of your system? Will anything help speed up the process?
Specifically, when I close my eyes to go to sleep, they keep rolling up and its freaking me out.
Not that it hurts horribly, but it is painful.

A: It took me 9 days to quit having symptoms after taking Abilify. There is no way to speed up the process. Hang in there!

Q: How affective is Abilify for Bi Polar?
I just started taking Abilify. I just was taken off of Lamictil due to the rash that I got. I am just curious if anyone has had a good experience with Abilify.

A: I take both Lamictal 200 mg and Abilify 10 mg, so I don’t know what Abilify alone does………but basically, it stopped the constant suicidal thoughts…of course, it didn’t make me ~happy~. It just stopped me from being so sad.

It’s not a magic bullet, but I did notice some improvement.

(I also take Geodon 40 mg for mania/psychosis.)

Good luck with Abilify!

Q: If Seroquel and/or abilify causes enlarged thyroid cancer will my doctor put me on another one?
Seroquel and Abilify can cause thyroid enlarged. If so, will my doctor put meo n something else?

A: you have to ask them…………i know thyroid problems can CAUSE mania, and other bi polar like symptoms, which it sounds like you have …….

talk to these doctors feelingfff.com or thyroid.about.com or elainemoore.com
best wishes

Q: Is it ok to combine energy drinks and abilify?
Hi, I’m on abilify and its making me tired most of the time. I know alcohol I shouldnt drink while on abilify is it ok if I drink an energy drink to feel more awake? Thanks for help.

A: I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to drink an energy drink while taking abilify. Call your pharamacy and ask. My doctor put me on abilify to get more energy about a week ago but it makes me tired as well…not sure if it will give me more energy the longer I take it but I take it right before I go to bed.

Q: taking Abilify long term: does the restlessness ever diminish or go away?
I am taking Abilify 5mg a day for one month. Does the restlessness feeling, Akathisia, diminish or go away after a time. Also, what are some ways to counteract this feeling without taking more other medication.
Abilify helps me alot with feelings of hurt and anger and getting upset. If there is a better med for this I would like to know. I was on lamictal before but unfortunately I developed a rash and had to discontinue. Thank you.

A: Like all medicines, everyone reacts differently. That is why you have to be on the right mix of meds for U. Most side effects including but not limited to the reslessness will subside within a month or two. You have to be patient with these meds and give them a chance to work before switching to another med. It will be well worth your patience in the long run. Good luck. I wish you the very best.
