Zyprexa QA

A: All anti-psychotics have weight gain as a side effect. If you let your doctor know that it is an issue for you maybe they can find another combination that might work for you but unfortunately all anti-psychotics and MOST mood stabilizers have those side effects. Sorry!

Q: What is the average dose for zyprexa?
its used for anxiety and other issues including people who hear voices in there head. im on 10mg i want to know the avrage amount that people are on comfortably? thank you
;)

A: 5-20 mg is standard. Right now I’m on 10mg for voices, anxiety, and delusions.

Q: When will my Zyprexa start to work?
i don’t really feel anything different.
ive been on this medication for about3-4 mounths on and off. im currently at 7.5mg for my g.anxiety d. i feel some days are better then others, will i get my life back?will it work soon , or do i have to go to a higher dose? any advice please feel free.thank you
;)

A: For me, zyprexa began working within a few days. However, my main reason for taking it was psychosis, so it’s a bit different. I would recommend that you switch to a different medication, 3-4 months is plenty long for it to start working. Be careful about going up, because the common weight gain is higher on higher doses.

Q: Is their an alternative to zyprexa that does not have sexual side effects?

A: Clozapine is a good alternative i’d say

Q: What are the side effects after the usage of CITALOPRAM and ZYPREXA?

A: Citalopram is used to treat depression. Citalopram is in a class of antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It works by increasing the amount of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain that helps maintain mental balance.

Citalopram may cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while taking this medication.
Olanzapine is used to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia (a mental illness that causes disturbed or unusual thinking, loss of interest in life, and strong or inappropriate emotions). It is also used to treat bipolar disorder (manic depressive disorder; a disease that causes episodes of depression, episodes of mania, and other abnormal moods). Olanzapine is in a class of medications called atypical antipsychotics. It works by changing the activity of certain natural substances in the brain.

Q: does a zyprexa every once in a while cause weight gain?
once in a while i take zyprexas (not routinely) and it has been 2.5 mg doses and 5 mg doses. will this still cause weight gain? or is it just routine doses that gain weight?

A: YES. I take zyprexa and makes me eat like a horse.

Q: I am in the process of weaning myself off of some of my Effexor XR and completely off of Zyprexa. Ideas?
I was taking 450mg of Effexor XR every morning and 2.5mg Zyprexa at night. Because i have a child on the way i wanted to be able to function at night (up until now i slept like a brick). I would continue on the Effexor, but my Phychiatrist stated that I would enter a manic episode if I didn’t wean from the Effexor first. I partially followed his advise to cut my Effexor dose to 300mg morning and completely stopped Zyprexa. This has been my regimen for the last few days and I am now starting to feel the brutal withdrawal effects of Effexor. I don’t want to go off of Effexor completely, but would like to maybe work down to 150mg in the future. Any ideas of when these flu-like symptoms may subside? I am sweating and my body feels like it is very shaky. Thanks bunches for your advise and God bless.

A: Talk to your doctor. Withdrawal sucks.

Q: can taking zyprexa (anti-psychotic) and ibuprofen together kill you?
I take Zyprexa every night. I take Ibuprofen for cramps. I am worried that if I take them at the same time would it kill me or have serious side effects?

A: AMEN SIMON! Zyprexa is the worse anti psychotic out there. I`ve seen people gain over 60lbs on that drug.

Q: How long do i have to stay on Zyprexa?
im taking zyprexa 5 mg and 3 oxazepam 10 mg. do i have to stay on this for long? how long?
and is 5mg like a low dose or high? cause i herd this can make you gain weight and ECT.Thanx enjoy the rest of your weekend.
;)

A: You may need to stay on Zyprexa for a while. You may gain weight, then it will stabilize. I have also started taking Zyprexa again and I am on 5mg’s. I haven’t gained any weight this time around, but I am also taking Zoloft and the Zoloft could be why I have not gained any weight.

Q: does anyone have problems with zyprexa and hair loss?
i’ve been on zyprexa for almost 7 years and my hair is really thinning badly. i’ve tried other anti-psychotics but zyprexa is the only one that seems to help. i also take prozac and wellbutrin. i don’t think those 2 cause hair loss. not to mention all the weight i’ve gained while taking the wonderful zyprexa. about 60 lbs total. anyone having this problem?

A: I don’t know about the hair loss, but I gained about 70 pounds in a VERY short period of time while taking Zyprexa. I was given it because I was having a lot of trouble sleeping (BIG-TIME overkill), and I was CONSTANTLY starving. There’s a lot of stuff out there online about this problem; as soon as I understood what was going on, I went off the stuff, and the weight came off as well.

My best advice to you is to talk with your doctor and/or pharmacist. Because of your weight gain, your estrogen levels could be fouled up, and that in turn can affect hair growth.

Good luck!

Q: What does Zyprexa do? What happens when you stop using it?
Will it stop eczema as a side effect and lead to recovery from eczema?

A: Zyprexa is a chemical mood stabilizer. It is used to balance the chemical swings associated with types of bipolar. If it was prescribed to you for bipolar, you should not “just stop”, talk to a doctor first. Depending on the dose, there may be some withdrawals, but the biggest danger is it doesn’t “fix” anything. So whatever conditions you had before, will be back when you stop.

The side effect would go away, but since usually the drug is given when a chemical imbalance is present in the person, it’s better to step from zyprexa to another drug rather than just going cold turkey.

Q: Zyprexa does anyone use this for their mental health?
Im taking zyprexa and was wondering how it works for others and what their taking it for?what kind of results are you experiencing?

A: Zyprexa is a very effective drug, but should be reserved for patients who REALLY need it. It causes severe weight gain in some people (not all!) I’m talking 60 lbs or more, and it can cause irregular heartbeat, approximately doubling your chances of sudden cardiac arrest. I think the doctor is supposed to be having you get EKG’s periodically to watch for this side effect, and I don’t know if that guarantees the drug won’t cause a heart attack. All atypical antipsychotic drugs have this heartbeat problem, though, so if you have psychosis, you have to take the risk. If you are a younger person, your overall risk is probably very low anyhow.

My brother took Zyprexa for a few months for bipolar disorder & it didn’t help. He also gained 60 lbs. He was lucky, though, and was able to lose all of it later. Many people are not able to do that. Another person I know thinks zyprexa helps him with his bipolar, and did not gain weight on it. He gets EKG’s once in awhile. My psychiatrist keeps a scale in her office and weighs all her patients who take zyprexa.

Q: zyprexa is causing a ton of weight gain but it works. is there any way to lose this weight?
i’ve been on it off and on for about 8 years and gained around 60 pounds in that time. i hate how i look.

A: Unfortunately zyprexa slows down the whole bodies metabolic function making you gain weight like crazy. I was on it and gained 40 pounds in just about 2-3 months. The only thing i can think of is to lower the dose of the medicine and stay away from junk food like the plague. This medicine makes it soooo hard to loose weight even with exercise I found it hard. Maybe try a different medicine or lower the dose.

Q: What are ur experiences taking zyprexa…ie did it work and how much do you take?

A: my daughter takes one tablet of 15mg each night, it works very well for her but can make her tired, Olanzapine is the more common name. It worked for her excellently after 8 days.It was and is her lifesaver.

Q: could zyprexa xanex and hydromorphone interact?
I was wondering, i took 8mg of hydromorphone about 3 hours ago and 2 hours after the hydromorphone i took 2 hours after 7.5mg of zyprexa and about an hour after the zyprexa i took 1mg of xanex, the xanex and zyprexa and prescribed to me and i started taking them today and the hydromorphone was prescribed to me the hydromorphone isnt. hydromorphone is a lesser version of morphine. i was wondering if i should be worried taking this combination.

A: Yes. If you are reading this, you clearly didn’t die, though I would consider you fortunate. All three drugs can make you sleepy, and drug-induced sleeps aren’t always easy to wake up from. 1 mg of Xanax is a typical dose that I wouldn’t be too worried about. 7.5 mg of Zyprexa is also a typical to low dose. The 8 mg of hydromorphone is very worrisome though. Hydromorphone is not a lesser form of morphine. It is quite a bit stronger than morphine. 8 mg is a very large dose and should only be taken by people in severe pain. The pain provides enough stimulation that they won’t stop breathing, but this is not the case for a person who isn’t in pain….
